After the Replica’s loss to Riku, Larxene and Vexen decide to use Namine – a girl who can change one’s memories – to erase the Replica’s memories and replace them with the same false memories that Namine had planted into Sora. The result is that the Replica now believes he is the true Riku who grew up on Destiny Islands, except with the new memory Namine planted (the same as in Sora) in which he made a promise to protect her. In repayment of the promise, Namine gives the Replica her good luck charm (a star-shaped pendent that is really based on the keychain Kairi gives to Sora). The Replica then goes after Sora, fighting with him once he figures out that Sora has the same memory of Namine as he does. While the Replica fights Sora many times, after every defeat he becomes increasingly unstable as he becomes aware of the fact that he is only a doll filled with a fake heart and fake memories. He continues to try to keep Sora away from Namine – as he sees himself as the only one fit to protect her – eventually going so far as to try to kill Sora. Namine stops this by accidentally and literally crushing the replica’s heart, so it falls down as only an empty doll. After being reunited with Namine, Sora goes on to fight Marluxia. The replica somehow revives itself through its obsession with its false memory of Namine, and promises to stay and protect the witch as Sora gets rid of the real Marluxia, as the one Sora and the replica defeated together was only an imitation. When Sora comes back, he treats the replica as if he is the real Riku, trying to convince that what the replica feels is its own emotion. The replica responds that though it is not real, it does not need to be real to see how real Sora’s feelings are. Afterwards, the Replica vanishes, to try to find some sort of meaning – though he insists that he will protect Namine still. Axel takes advantage of the replica’s moment of weakness by insisting if it were to kill and absorb Zexion that it would gain powers that the real Riku does not possess – in this way he would justify his existence and become his own person. After Zexion is weakened in a fight with the real Riku, the replica absorbs Zexion and immediately goes after Riku, saying that though it is has gained new powers, it still feels empty. It convinces itself that if it could kill Riku, it could become real and take his place in existence. After its defeat, the replica seems to be fading away – much like the death of Nobodies. As he lies mortally wounded and wondering where his fake heart will go once he dies, Riku attempts to console the replica by saying that its heart will go to the same place as Riku’s. All the replica replies with is “How original” before fading completely away with a small smile. |
